I finally broke down and bought an Apple watch and am most interested in seeing the change of my phone usage.
Our phones have two primary functions: communication (speaking, texting, or emailing with other people) and consumption (reading news, social media, games). I’ve never been so aware of the difference of these two functions as seeing the split between the phone and smart watch. You really can’t consume media on an Apple watch. Its primary usage seems to be: as a watch and activity recording device, plus communication, as you receive notifications of texts, calls, and emails.
I’m interested to see how this split changes my use of technology. I noticed that I left my phone in my jacket, because I still had the assurance of being able to receive messages and other communication. The end result is that yesterday, I didn’t keep up with the news as much or social media.
Meaning, I have the communication without the consumption. This leaves time to be more intentional about consumption of quality long-form content that improves your life, like books.
